Did you fix it? I am getting the link address showing up in the status bar on hover in IE 5.5, 6, and 7 here. (Win xp pro running under VMware Fusion on Mac OS X 10.5.) Clicking the links takes me to a 404 page, as you likely know. But it does prove they can be activated. What I do see in IE 5.5 and 6 is a barely visible light gray image, due to your use of PNG (and not PNG-8, which might work for you.)
