try this layout pattern.

the html:
<div class="right">
</div>
<div class="left">
</div>
<div class="mid">
</div>

the css
.right { width:100px;float:right;}
.left { width:100px; float:left;}
.mid {width:500px;}

this is actually a 3-column layout pattern but this can also be
applied to anything that needs left-mid-right layout.
