Inorder to achieve your goals a different construct may help. Keep 
everything in the left column physically independent of everything in 
the right column. Set no height except on  images and such.  Set width 
on floats. Clearing floats takes study and experience. God may punish 
you if you do not let users  land on  their default rather than your 
preference. Check your work at  +2 font-scaling.  And pray. A lot :-) .

Your markup errors not corrected. Cursory checked in Mac compliant 
browsers and XP IE/6.0 and 7.0. No hacks needed-- so far...

Create a faux column to bring the left column to the footer when fonts 
are scaled-- Google for same.
