I've played around with your proposed settings, and whilst I found there was no effect using vertical-align:bottom, I did manage to get things obeying me once I changed the embedded flash object to display as a block. It's looking a lot better now, even if there is a 1 pixel space still underneath it, which I can't get rid of, but it's too little a problem to worry about.
