The answer to your questions/problems in my opinion has nothing to do with CSS or the w3c validation service. I think you have a very fundamental and basic design problem that needs to be resolved. Namely positioning content on the page such that users of average intelligence will understand what you are attempting to convey when they land on the page. And set the line-measure so that it does not extend from San Francisco to Manhattan.
