Ah, right. I hadn't realised that the Spry thing was treated as an unbreakable box. That explains a lot.
Personally I prefer using a JS method such as you mentioned below. The developer who built this site, however, was having something of a love affair with Spry and used it in as many places as he possibly could. *sigh* I've let me boss know and requested approval to redevelop that page without the Spry widget as the easiest method of fixing the issues it has.
