If you set a width to 100% and then include padding then the
dimensions of the element will be 100% + padding + border. Let your
elements find their own size with width: auto...
ul.menu ul li a, ul.menu ul li { width: auto; }
By the way, there must be lots of well tested pre-canned dropdown
menus like this. Why re-invent the wheel?
