If you hover your mouse over them and look at the status bar of your browser so that you can see the destination of the link you can see that the edges of the links drop vertically from the top of the diagonal lines, so it is possible to point at the 'Home' link and get to the 'Study' page. To have shaped links you would have to use image maps or Flash.
