I've got it rendering properly by using Dean Edwards IE7-js script.
Unfortunately, the PHP doesn't work for IE6 for some reason, and I can't think of any way to debug it. So, unless anyone knows better, I guess it's got to be IE7 or better as far as IE is concerned. Not looking forward to telling this to my client, I have to say.
