Eric,

I think this layout may resolve two issues?

1/ The Safari footer/content  overlap.
2/ Something you did not mention -- an extraordinary long line-measure 
in wide windows, particularly at 116.5 to 140 dpi.

I only checked it in Mac Opera, Camino, Safari, and Firefox.

Based on a stripped and modified concept/layout [1] by Georg Sortun.
