I am not sure what the question is but anyway some observations:
You are setting the page with the belief that everyone is on a 1024
monitor. Hold a fixed width of 980 and center the page rail to rail, or
set a min/max width so the page width adjusts to the users monitor.
Either way, it would be a good idea to increase the width of the sidebar.
You write about Jack Vance with grace, dignity, and simplicity: give
the visual [the page proper] a similar "look and feel" and all will be
well...
