Are these problems just a matter of correctly targeting the places I
want these lines to be?
Yes. You take the idea and modifies it along with the rest of your
styles until you get the visual appearance you want. Maybe you'll have
to move your existing styles around a bit to make it work. Hard for me
to do that right from seeing one page.
Also, avoid the use of inline-styles whenever/wherever you can, so you
don't have to override such styles from the stylesheet.
