Just today I learned about this when I was fighting some float problems in
IE.

Apparently that is a well known solution enabling e.g. making lines well

Answering your question (what I think): I rarely need this, since in my line
of work I don't work with many lines of text and pages I need to CSS have
different uses than just reading. However I have not heard of anything else
that enables setting max width in old IE and this alone makes the hack worth
remembering. ;)
