Just today I learned about this when I was fighting some float problems in IE. Apparently that is a well known solution enabling e.g. making lines well readable. See more here: http://www.svendtofte.com/code/max_width_in_ie/ Answering your question (what I think): I rarely need this, since in my line of work I don't work with many lines of text and pages I need to CSS have different uses than just reading.
