There are many potential formatting problems with text appearing in an italic font (or in a slanted font, or as algorithmically slanted). There is little reason that the use of <i> markup, as opposite to CSS ways, would be relevant, though. If there were such situations, the issue would be off-topic for this list, which is about CSS, not HTML.
