Yes, one can do that. It is a bit quirky in IE 8 and 9 (the elements don't 
really loose their 'tableness'), but that can be worked around by additionally 
using float. Gecko 1.9.2 +, WebKit and Opera 10+ all work correctly. IE 10 
Consumer Preview also works fine, afaict.
