I don't pay much attention to stats, and as a general rule base grade of support on how well various versions of any browser work and render when served reasonably updated standard based code and content.

For my own sites: if support for older browser versions means downgrading for latest versions, all but serious content- and functionality-blocking failures in older versions are ignored.

For paid work: paying clients get a choice and have to decide how much extra they are willing to pay for support of specific old and obsolete browser versions. That's when I look at and refer to stats :-)
