well I just added
#nav_id ul li {
display: inline;
}
and it seems to have cleared it up...
previously I had only
#nav_id ul {
float: center;
min-width: 320px;
height: 38px;
list-style-image: none;
list-style-position: outside;
list-style-type: none;
margin: 4px 100px;
-margin: 4px 130px;
$margin: 4px 130px;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-weight: 400;
}
