This is question is best answered on a Database discussion group but I'd look at Postgres or Mysql.

If you're using a small Access database it shouldn't be a problem for Java to handle the processing because you can't be working with a huge ResultSet. If you could send the query you're trying to run and specify what you're wanting to do with the result it would help.
