With almost 40 members that attended, and two well-received presentations, it seems we are in for a great year! The theme for next week's meeting is Architecture. We will be looking at both Enterprise and Software Architecture. The refreshments afterwards will be sponsored by the Astrata Group (http://www.astratagroup.com/). Our first speaker is Roderick Lim Banda. He will be giving the same presentation for us that he delivered at the Open Group's IT Architecture Practitioner's Conference two weeks ago in Barcelona. The title of his presentation is Enterprise Architecture and an Organizational Model for Governing IT. Our second speaker for the evening will be Nicky Terblanche. He will be exploring The Role of the Architect within the context of the software development process. Please find biographies and abstracts for both our speakers below. Architecture and an Organizational Model for Governing IT This paper positions EA as part of the strategy and architecture portfolio at the executive level and presents an organizational model for governing IT under the Enterprise Architecture Office. The case studies presented will also discuss some of the challenges encountered in the adoption of this model, including:
Biography For Roderick Lim Banda Roderick Lim Banda is a lecturer and consultant from Cape Town, South Africa. He lectures at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and is a senior enterprise architect with Fidentia Software Futures. Roderick consults on enterprise architecture in the education, government, media, financial services and retail sectors. Roderick initially studied fine art and architecture before entering the information technology (IT) industry. He has a graphic arts background and has researched modern movements in arts and architecture. He has been involved in IT for over 15 years and has specialised in architecture and the development of metadata repositories, CASE tools and metadata-based architectures. He has software architecture and software engineering experience related to visual modeling notations, object-orientated methodologies, client server, web based application development and service orientated architecture. Roderick is a founding member of the World Wide Institute of Software Architects (WWISA) and is involved with the architecture community. While completing a research thesis entitled "Building Architecture as a Reference for Architecture Intensive Disciplines", he established Knowledge Architected Systems Engineering (KASE) as a research and academic network. Roderick is platform-agnostic and has no preferences in technology. His work exposes him to a number of environments and technologies. He is the acting Enterprise Architect at UWC and is helping to establish both enterprise architecture (EA) and the adoption of free and open source software (FOSS). Roderick is married with two sons. The Role of the Architect Nicky holds a Master's degree in electronic engineering form the University of Stellenbosch where he specialised in speech recognition. He has worked in the telecommunications and financial services industries in Ireland, the UK and South Africa. He is currently a software architect at Metropolitan.
