I agree. Also .. don't forget that there's a third level of programmer in some instances.
There's: Junior Java Programmer Java Programmer Senior Java Programmer I would call a Senior Java programmer an individual as described by Johan below while a plain old Java programmer is someone with 2 - 5 years experience who doesn't fit the criteria below. Senior programmers typically train Junior programmers. I tend to agree that the most of the industry is VERY harsh on junior programmers right now because companies aren't willing to train these guys up for the future. They're more interested in hiring guys who can develop entire systems on their own immediately. I blame outsourcing and contracting on this problem. Companies very seldom even train their workforces anymore. I noticed this in a mega-company I previously worked for where profit and the share price proved more important than the people who worked there. It's a sad trend. We have a lot of "Senior" developers who cant even write a proper hello world application. According to me you can't be called a "Senior" developer before you have worked on and successfully delivered a big commercial product. A developer can't be a senior until he knows the ins and outs of the language he uses and working on a really big system will give a developer the opportunity to learn that and get the experience needed.
