Bruce, I have played around with this previously and it works pretty well, though I have forgotten exact details.
Some generic advice: (1) experiment and play extensively before you move your production environment from path/to/repository (2) there are a few cool switches you can use to leave behind deadwood (3) also look at the SVN manual. Tortoise can be slightly brief. (4) use the command line while experimenting... (OK I am not a Tortoise fan.) My 2 c worth.
