I did in fact play with it (google web toolkit), it is amazing!
In no time at all I had a working web site with richness that I could only dream of were I to code in _javascript_ from scratch...
I wrote a blog on it: http://analysis102.blogspot.com/2006/05/google-web-toolkit-first-look.html
The challenges would be integrating it into your whole web site. You can't exactly build you whole web site on it. The biggest strength I feel is that if you accept the the compilation to _javascript_ is bullet proof then you just have to make sure your java code is robust. The toolkit generates 4 _javascript_ payloads, one each for firefox, ie, safari and opera.
You're right though, the proof is in the pudding - deploy it in production is the essential test.
It's certainly _very_ cool! - it enables me, who knows nothing about _javascript_, to effectively code in _javascript_.

Cool - but if did you know that with the Goole Web Toolkit you can create this kind of stuff with just plain old Java - no more _javascript_ debugging.. you code straight in Java (lang & util) and it gets compiled into script and css for layout - I havn't done much, but I believe you can just export a war - remote method calls stuff seems easy too.. just a bit of playing around but the possiblities are pretty amazing.. check it out http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/ - Id love to know anyone that has put something into production - my own experience so far is that you have to test test and test, (Collections like set compile and work fine.. almost ..)
