At least with compiling the Tomcat APR ( Apache Portable Runtime ) JNI wrappers you should have equivalent to Apache speeds out of a Tomcat only deployment. Oh for the port 80 issue with Tomcat we use a firewall forward rule on the box to redirect requests to port 8443 from 443....
