We started one in Round Rock this year, too.
We have done something in the summer for several years now for older kids
very much like Cedar Parks. I think we went with 7 or 8 years and up the
first few years. We usually did it around 3 in the afternoon.
This year we started one day a week afterschool - on Thursdays at 4. For the
school year we went with ages 6 and up and that's what we left it at this
summer. Our intention with the
afterschool was to do a film one week, books one week, a craft one week, and
whatever the other week. We found that we can't keep them away if we say
"craft", but the books and films were not so well attended. So what we are
doing now is reading mostly picture books or excerpts from fiction,
sometimes short films or videos, and a fairly simple craft for the last
20-20 minutes of the program. We have been pre-registering because of the
craft, usually 25 -30, and often turn people away. That is really
disappointing if we have no-shows, but we overbook by about 25% or so. We
have also told people they can come to the story portion even if we cannot
accommodate them for the craft, and it usually works out OK.
We do themes; the summer reading manuals are a great starting point. Most of
ours for the summer come from the manual. We use past manuals (and the
index) for crafts, as well as finding crafts on web sites. craft books, etc.
I that think about covers it.

Subject: Afterschool Library Programs
A CTLS member library is interested in finding out which libraries in the
system offer afterschool programs, what they do, what ages, etc. If you
have a minute to respond, that would be wonderful. I know everyone is very
busy with summer reading, but it is time to be thinking about the fall!
