I know you've all been wondering about the fall Small Library Management
session. Thank you for your patience while we've gotten everything in place!
Brochures for the fall session will be mailed out this week, but please feel
free to pass this information along via e-mail to your colleagues who may
not be on the discussion list.

Following is all the information you will need about topics, dates and
locations for the fall series. PLEASE NOTE: The online registration form
will be up and running by the end of this week at

SMALL LIBRARY MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM
Session IV- Reference Services

DATES & LOCATIONS:

LUBBOCK         September 6-7, 2001
CARROLLTON              September 20-21, 2001
CORPUS CHRISTI  October 4-5, 2001
BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION   October 18-19, 2001

TOPICS:

Topics for Session IV include providing reference services in the small
community library, defining "reference" and determining the right level of
service, conducting effective reference interviews, developing reference
service policy, andevaluating print and online resources. This workshop will
include hands-on exercises.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This program is only for directors of libraries serving populations of
25,000 or less who do not have masters degrees in Library and Information
Science. (The workshop material has been tailored for library managers.)
Library directors with MLIS degrees are not eligible. Participants should
register with the intention of completing the entire two and one-half year
program.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Margaret Irby Nichols is considered by many to be the grande dame of
Reference Service. Her seminars are eagerly anticipated as some of the most
useful and entertaining being presented in libraries today. During the past
ten years she has presented numerous workshops on all aspects of reference
service for individual libraries, Texas Library System offices, and the
Texas State Library. From 1992 to 1997 she was one of the main instructors
in the Missouri State Library's annual two-week training institute for
non-MLS librarians. Dr. Nichols retired her professorship at the University
of North Texas at Denton in 1993, but remains active on the workshop
circuit.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Continuing a tradition established in 1995, the Tocker Foundation of Austin
is accepting applications for financial assistance to cover travel costs
(hotel, mileage, etc.) or replacement staff expense for eligible libraries.
Forms are availabel online at: www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/slmpt/ or may
be requested on the attached registration form. Completed forms should be
submitted to Executive Director Darryl Tocker at least 10 days before the
workshops (the address and fax number are listed on the top of the form).

REGISTRATION, ETC.:

You may register online at

including maps to the workshops site and a list of overnight accomodations,
will come up automatically once the online registration form is submitted.

A $10 donation, payable at the door, will be requested to cover the cost of
providing refreshments. Lunches on day two will be ordered from Jason's
Deli.

OBJECTIVES:

After attending this workshop, participants will:

*Understand the theory behind providing reference services
*Be able to develop a reference service policy
*Become familiar with various types of reference resources
*Learn techniques for conducting effective reference interviews

CREDIT HOURS:

Up to 11 hours of Continuing Education will be offered to participants
filling out a form at the workshop.

*PLEASE NOTE: Day one will begin at 12:30 p.m. and run until 5:00 p.m.
