NEWS YOU CAN USE

CTLS Regional Meetings
Plan to attend a regional meeting with your library's lay representative
where we will discuss the components of the 2004-2005 biennial budget.
There are five regional meetings in the System:
* November 1 in Lampasas
* November 2 in Dripping Springs
* November 7 in Pflugerville
* November 8 in LaGrange
* November 9 in Fairfield
All the meetings will be held in the libraries; registration begins at 8:30
a.m. The meetings begin at 9:00 a.m. and will end promptly at noon.

Online Registration for Meetings and Workshops
A new feature of the CTLS Web site is online registration for CTLS meetings
and workshops. When you receive a flyer for one of our meetings or
workshops, you can go to the CTLS home page and click on workshops or type
in the URL www.ctls.net/document/wssignup.htm to sign up for CTLS meetings
and workshops. It's the fastest, easiest way to sign up - try it and see!

TLA District III Meeting
If you are a member of the Texas Library Association, you won't want to miss
the TLA District III Fall Meeting on Saturday, October 13 from 9:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. in the Taylor City Hall Auditorium at 400 Porter St. In the
morning, Christine McNew will present Internet Resources for Homework for
Grades K-12, Olga Weiss will reflect on Being a Solo Librarian, and Beverly
Shirley will discuss Online Databases for Public, School and Academic
Librarians. Texas State Library and Archives Director Peggy Rudd will speak
at the luncheon, and Sheila Phillips will do some Afternoon Storytelling.

This is a wonderful way to network and get continuing education credit
toward your county librarian certification as well as counting as workshops
for collection development grants from the System. You should have received
a registration flyer in September. If you didn't get one, or if you'd like
to join TLA, you can call their office in Austin at 800-580-2852 or
512-328-1518.

Subscribing to CTLS-L
The best way to keep informed of important events and opportunities in the
Central Texas Library System is to subscribe to CTLS-L. CTLS-L can help us
share skills, ideas, information, and questions, so that we can work
together more effectively to meet the library needs of the people of central
Texas.

The consultants here in the System office post critical information on
CTLS-L as well as including the information in CTLS mailings, so CTLS-L
subscribers often know about important events sooner than those who depend
on conventional mail. Information from the Texas State Library and Archives
Commission is forwarded to CTLS-L by the System consultants, and the
discussions initiated by members are informative and lively. There are even
occasional offers of free gently used books or other small items that are
only offered on the list.

In order to subscribe to CTLS-L, send to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the
body of the message type:  subscribe ctls-l, <your e-mail address>, <your
full name>. Do not include the brackets, but DO include the comma and
space. In order to un-subscribe to CTLS-L, send to [EMAIL PROTECTED],
and in the body of the message type: unsubscribe ctls-l. No name is
necessary.

Large Print Deposit Collection Exchange
If your library keeps a Deposit Collection of large print books, this is a
good time to exchange them. Your patrons will have new deposit books for
the holiday reading season. There are some Christmas stories, and we have
several mystery, romance and western series available as well as classic
general fiction and nonfiction. If you would like to exchange your deposit
packet, or if you would like to get a deposit collection for your library,
please call the System office at 800-262-4431 or 512-974-7488.

New Telephone Exchange for CTLS
Some of you may already be aware that the exchange in the telephone numbers
in the System office changed on August 11. The new exchange is 974 instead
of 499. The area code and the rest of the numbers have not changed. The
499-exchange will work until January 1, 2002.

Printing funded with a grant from the Texas State Library through the Texas
Library Systems Act and the Library Services and Technology Act.
