The recent mailing of Anthrax to public and private businesses has alerted the library world to security concerns for our staff handling mail. In response to this new threat, the United States post office will now set aside and inspect all mail with no return address, incomplete address, or poorly packaged and soiled items. To avoid delayed returns, note your return address completely on all ILL returns and secure your packages so that they arrive safely. We received two packages with no return address which were inspected by the post office. We will also make sure our packages are secure so that they arrive safely to you.
If you want to know how to protect your staff by instituting safe mail handling procedures, the USPS website has good information. Read "What Constitutes a Suspicious Letter or Parcel?" which is imbedded in the feature article "What To Do If You Receive An Anthrax Threat." Download and print their "Suspicious Mail Alert" pdf poster for display in the area where you receive mail. The address is http://www.usps.com/news/2001/press/serviceupdates.htm.
