For the second year, the Syracuse University School of Information Studies is pleased to offer the 21st-Century Librarian Award, recognizing librarians' work in shaping the new information environment that is emerging on a global scale.
The 21st-Century Librarian Award will provide $5,000 to a librarian who has been a leader in the evolution of the librarianship in this new milieu. This year, the School of Information Studies is adding a second award, the 21st-Century Librarian of Central New York Award. This award will provide $1000 to a librarian in the Central New York region who has been a leader in the evolution of the profession in Central New York. All applicants will be eligible for the $5,000 award, and applicants from Central New York will automatically be eligible for the regional award. Both award winners will be recognized at a ceremony celebrating their accomplishments, and 21st-century librarianship, on October 18, 2002, in Syracuse, New York. The successful applicants will display a history of actively adapting the established principles and practices of librarianship to the changing information environment, through ongoing or completed projects, activities, and leadership. Applicants should be active in shaping the organizational, social, and technological transition to the increasingly digital library with respect to one or more of the following areas: *Social awareness, including services to underserved communities *Ethic of service, including focus on the needs and concerns of information users in the new environment *Free flow of information, including issues of access, censorship, privacy, confidentiality and intellectual property *Creative implementation of technology for library and service provision, including issues of digital libraries and digital preservation *Redefinition of information publication and communication, in scholarly communities and other arenas *Development and implementation of "intellectual technologies," such as thesauri, ontologies, search engines, and natural language processing applications *Planning, design, implementation, and on-going achievement in the above areas *Collaboration and partnerships to achieve the above *Impact on the communities being served For more information, contact the 21st-Century Librarian Award Committee at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit their web site at http://istweb.syr.edu/librarianaward.
