(NEW YORK, NY) May 1, 2002 - The American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) will present awards to the winners of the 2001
Henry Bergh Children's Book Awards & Honors at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 17
in the Georgia East Room of the Renaissance Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. Named
after the founder of the nation's oldest animal welfare organization, the
awards and honors will go to eleven selected books published in 2001 based
on their exemplary handling of subject matter pertaining to animals and the
environment.
"Not only are these books great fun, but they promote a humane ethic of
consideration for all living things," says ASPCA Director of Humane
Education, Dr. Sheryl Dickstein Pipe, Ph.D. "The winning titles were
selected on the basis of promoting appropriate behaviors and compassion and
respect for all living things."
The eleven winning books range in style and subject matter. Four winners in
the non-fiction category include: experiencing life with Jane Goodall during
her stay with an African chimpanzee community, a tale about an injured sea
turtle and his rescue, a history of horses' role in society and a chronicle
of the roles that dogs played during the Gold Rush Era. Five winners in the
fiction category include: a blind dog that saves a girl from drowning, an
adventure about children who rescue a sick elephant from a circus, a story
about how people can happily coexist with wildlife, a heartwarming tale
about the survival of a baby rhino and an account of how a family adopts a
dog from an animal shelter. The winning book in poetry celebrates the world
of tiny creatures.
