TexShare was recently awarded a $1 million dollar grant to improve medical
database selections. The first database to be purchased with this grant
is Salud para Todos, Ebsco's consumer health information database. To get to
Salud para Todos, choose EBSCO (all EBSCO) or EBSCO host Espanol from the
menu at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/texshare/pl/index.html. When you get to
the EBSCO host page, scroll all the way down to the end to reach Salud para
Todos.
This resource was considered by the Electronic Information Working Group as
one
that would be beneficial to a wide variety of libraries that compose the
TexShare membership. It will be especially useful in public libraries with
large numbers of Spanish speaking patrons, for physicians to share with
their Spanish-speaking patients and the Texas Dept. of Health has expressed
interest in this product for use in their public health clinics. More
information will follow on future purchases planned with this grant. The
Texas State Library would like to thank the Telecommunications
Infrastructure Fund (TIF) and the TIF Library Working Group for approaching
the TSLAC with the idea for this grant. Read below for more information
about this database. It has been included on the EbscoHost menu page and all
links should be fully functional.

Salud para Todos

Salud para Todos (en Espaol) provides full text Spanish-language
information for a wide variety of medical and health-related topics. This
product is designed to make useful health information more readily
accessible for Spanish-speaking consumers and patients. It includes a wealth
of valuable information gained from federal and state agencies, voluntary
health associations, pharmaceutical companies, and other health-related
organizations. The easy-to-use interface allows the researcher to quickly
find the information via keyword search and/or category searching.
The product has been set up using the EBSCO Espaol interface, which
provides instructions and tips in Spanish language.

The content in the product is made up of the following data:

- All articles that appeared in the Oryx Press print product of the
same name
- Essays and articles from government and health agencies
- Articles from Nidus Publishing's Well-Connected series
- Articles from the Clinical Reference Systems collection

The articles in "Salud para Todos" were selected from over 300 publications
and sources created by over fifty (50) research associations and national
institutes. Much of the data was originally prepared in Spanish, with the
remainder translated for consumer use by Irene Afranchino-Miniello, a
translator at the International Center of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Alan M. Rees, editor of the print product, continues his efforts in
identifying Spanish language content in the most important category areas
for the online version of the product.

The data is well indexed, with each article being associated to one of 48
main categories. Researchers will be able to search the data using a
keyword search, as well as through selection of one of the 48 categories in
a drop-down category box. Categories include substance abuse, cancer,
mental health, contraception, infectious diseases and many other key health
areas.

TexShare member libraries will serve their Spanish-speaking researchers with
important health information. The product will be updated regularly.
Existing data will be updated and new data will be added each year.
The product is cumulative and new content will be added each year.

This database is exclusive to EBSCO Publishing.
