(from PUBLIB. -L.) Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 23:22:17 -0800 (PST) From: "Nix, Larry DPI" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: publib <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: A Postage Stamp Commemorating Public Libraries > I'm writing to request your support for the issuance of a postage stamp by the United States Postal Service commemorating the contribution of America's public libraries to our nation. On April 9th of this year our nation will celebrate the 170th anniversary of the establishment of the Peterborough (New Hampshire) Town Library, the oldest free library in the world supported by taxation. In 2004 we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Boston Public Library, the prototype of the modern public library. In 2006, we will celebrate the 275th anniversary of the founding of Ben Franklin's Library Company of Philadelphia, a predecessor to the free public library. A century ago, with the assistance of Andrew Carnegie and others, a public library building boom was underway. Numerous public libraries will be celebrating their centennials or other significant anniversaries in the next few years. Although in the scope of the many challenges faced by public libraries a postage stamp may seem mundane, it would be a visible reminder that public libraries have been and continue to be an integral part of our American society. If you agree, please take time to drop a brief note of support to the: Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee U.S. Postal Service 475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW Room 5670 Washington, DC 20260-2437 More information can be found at http://my.execpc.com/~nixlt/publibstamp.htm .
