For convenience, I've added the letters by CTLS librarians previously posted on CTLS-L to http://www.ctls.net/TSLACmemberletters.htm (these are letters to Peggy Rudd on funding databases with direct aid and CD, a suggestion by Barbara Gubbin which will be discussed at today's LSA Board meeting, and the earlier letters to the TSLAC commissioners.) If anyone would like a letter posted, I'd be glad to do so. I appreciate the Loan Star Libraries program because it gives me the ability to do an extra project each year, but if I were to weigh the value of those projects versus the value of the TexShare databases, there would be no contest. The databases would win hands down. A library our size could never fund anything approaching the TexShare databases on our own. This is one area where the playing field really is leveled. We can offer the same access to our patrons that much larger libraries can. While my opinion may be partially affected by the newness of the Loan Star Libraries money, (It's hard to miss something you haven't had very long), I could give up the Loan Star money faster than I could the databases. The collection development funds are another story. For our library, we're not talking about a great deal of money, but it does make a difference. We are able to purchase items that we would otherwise have to pass up. I also know how much the collection development money means to small libraries. I think that taking that away would really pull the rug out from under many of them. Patrons are still reading and still want new and up-to-date books. While I understand the proposal to use collection development money to fund the databases, I'd recommend against it. Please contact me if you have any questions.
