Product update information from Gale. Russlene Waukechon TexShare Database Coordinator Texas State Library and Archives Commission 512.463.7402 512.936.2306(f) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Monday, July 21, 2003 GALE(R)'S RESOURCE CENTERS LINK TO LIBRARY CATALOG New technology allows patrons to move from research databases to broader library collection Gale's continuing effort to provide barrier-free searching will take another step with new technology that allows searches within Gale's Resource Centers to link to the contents in the library's online catalog. Gale pioneered the concept of online Resource Centers, which integrate reference, periodical databases and primary sources within a single search interface. The new links-to-holdings feature, a free service, allows Resource Center users to access the broader library collection while still in the database. While Resource Centers are primarily full-text, the link quickly determines whether the library has physical copies of books and articles found in searches -- a benefit to those who prefer to read paper versus screen or wish to read in an area away from the computer. The link from within the Resource Center also allows the library to brand its catalog and content with options for customization. For example, the link can be either a customized text message or a custom library graphic. The links-to-holdings feature comes on the heels of several other links that allow broad searches of other collections from Gale databases. Gale recently announced a link from InfoTrac, its signature periodical database, to OCLC's WorldCat system, the world's largest library catalog. In 2002, Gale and Ingenta formed a partnership allowing links between InfoTrac and a library's Ingenta journals. Prior to the Ingenta partnership, Gale had adopted the OpenURL standards and initiated links within MARC records. Links-to-holdings will be released in August with links available in Business & Company Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, Health & Wellness Resource Center and Biography Resource Centers. Others will follow throughout the balance of 2003. If you have already taken the time to set up links to holdings for your InfoTrac(R) Web products, the update will be automatic for your Resource Center products. Directions for activating the holdings links can be downloaded from Gale's Web site at: http://www.gale.com/customer_service/technical_information/bulletins.htm. Or contact Gale's Technical Support team at 1-800-877-4253, option 4. If you have any comments or questions about this information, please contact me directly.
