We the People Bookshelf on "Courage"
As part of its We the People initiative, the National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH) is collaborating with the American Library Association
(ALA) to inaugurate the We the People Bookshelf, a program to encourage
young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes
in American history.

You are invited to apply to be among the 500 libraries selected to receive
the We the People Bookshelf, which includes the following titles featured on
NEH's Summertime Favorites list:

Kindergarten through 3rd Grade
The Cabin Faced West by Jean Fritz
Anansi the Spider by Gerald McDermott
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig

4th Grade through 6th Grade
The Dream Keeper and Other Poems by Langston Hughes
The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmonds
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George

7th Grade through 8th Grade
Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

9th Grade through 12th Grade
The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Applications are due October 22, 2003, 5 p.m. local time, for Round One AND
