Members: As of December
30, 2003 TSLAC has received 85% ($1.3 million) of the TexShare
database fees that are being collected to help pay for the databases in FY
2004. I expect to receive the remainder of the fees by January
31, 2004. TSLAC thanks all of you for your contribution! In
addition, the TexShare Task Force on Database Fees (see roster: http://www.texshare.edu/programs/academicdb/feestaskforce.html)
has been working very hard the past few months developing a long-term
fee structure that reflects a combination of the audience served by
the library and the library's ability to pay. First,
the total $1.5 million that needs to be collected was split into 75%
academic libraries and 25% public libraries based on database usage. The
formula for the fee is a weighted combination of 30% undergraduate FTE's
and 70% information resources expenditures for academic libraries (adding up to
$1,125,000), and 30% population served and 70% collection expenditures for
public libraries (adding up to $375,000). Several ceilings and
floors were added for the academic libraries and one ceiling and floor was
added for the public libraries. Please take a look at the new fee
structure for public libraries http://www.texshare.edu/programs/academicdb/fees/long_term_fee_public_library.2003_12_16.html And academic
libraries & libraries of clinical medicine
http://www.texshare.edu/programs/academicdb/fees/long_term_fee_academic_library.2003_12_16.html
Please note that
these fee structures were based on the latest statistics available in November
2003. The final fee assessments will be determined in August
2004 using the latest information available at that time, so the fees may
be slightly different. Before TSLAC
takes this recommendation to the TexShare Advisory Board, we would
like to invite your comments. Please respond to this note by sending a
message to the TexShare mailbox at [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you have
questions or need additional information, please contact me (contact
information below) or Beverley Shirley, Library Resource Sharing Division
Director (512-463-5433; [EMAIL PROTECTED]). A special thank
you goes out to the members of the TexShare Task Force on Database Fees for all
their hard work and understanding of the complexity of
this task, and for being willing to make the difficult decisions. Thank you, Ann Mason TexShare
