JUST SCHEDULED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:

3/24/04 - (9:00 am - 12:00 pm) Course # 328 - Special Events Planning for Nonprofits led by Robin Loving

In process of scheduling a full-day learning opportunity in March or April on Nonprofit Financial Management that will include, among other topics, understanding nonprofit financial statements, interpreting the 990s, understating an audit, and what to look for in appointing an auditor for your agency

Are Austinites really as smart as they think they are? We’ll find out in April.

Austin’s first Great Grownup Spelling Bee for Literacy will be held Thursday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. at La Zona Rosa.  Round up your smartest colleagues and showoff your spelling skills while supporting the fight against illiteracy in Central Texas.  Or, if spelling is not your thing, come to cheer your favorite team and witness a unique, weirdly- Austin event.

Former Austin Mayor Kirk Watson will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Don’t worry about being singled out, this is a team competition!  Each team, sponsored by a local business, consists of three members.  For the $1,000 team entry fee, each sponsor will support one team, receive 8 tickets for a cheering section, and get lunch for everyone.  In addition, all sponsors will be immensely thanked in promotional materials and recognized the day of the event as the good corporate citizens they are.

The deadline for submitting teams is Friday, February 20.

To learn more about the Great Grownup Spelling Bee for Literacy, or to sponsor a team, please contact Elise Sillers at [EMAIL PROTECTED], Retta Kelley at 912-2959 or [EMAIL PROTECTED], or Gail Miller at the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas at 223-7975 or [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Illiteracy is a serious problem in Central Texas.  The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas works with more than 50 different organizations battling an illiteracy rate in Central Texas approaching 20 percent.  Illiterates weigh down their community by limiting intellectual progression.  This affects taxpayers who must support those that cannot support themselves.  By becoming a more literate society, everyone benefits as we become a stronger, smarter, more adaptable community.

In December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics* reported a "28.8 percent (Sept. 03) increase in volunteer participation by Americans, up from 27.4 percent from the previous year (Sept. 02)."  In order to meet the increasing needs of the Central Texas volunteering community, the Directors of Volunteers in Austin (DOVIA) provides those of you who work with volunteers the extra tools needed to maximize your volunteer programs.

Directors of Volunteers in Austin (DOVIA) is a professional organization that promotes volunteer administration and service leadership as a profession, facilitates the exchange of experience in the creative involvement of volunteers in service delivery, and offers educational opportunities for professional development of volunteer leaders in Central Texas. DOVIA helps to equip service leaders with resources needed to successfully guide volunteer programs through challenges and changing needs.

Volunteers are the core of most nonprofit organizations. If you utilize volunteers within your organization, then you need DOVIA by your side. DOVIA can open doors to the volunteer community allowing your volunteer program to flourish by connecting you with the many local and national volunteer management resources and access to leaders in the field of volunteer management.

DOVIA's Annual Membership Drive runs from January 1 - February 15, 2004.  Don't miss out on this great opportunity to become a member or renew your membership in an organization that has been serving the needs of volunteer managers for over sixteen years!
