Message from Russlene Waukechon, TexShare Database
Coordinator:
Please read the information below. I wanted to let you know
about our plans for Heritage Quest before TLA. A separate
letter will be going out to the libraries in TexShare under
Peggy's signature soon. Attached is the pledge drive
schedule. If you have questions about this please contact
me.

Suggested Pledge Donations Needed for Successful Retention
of HeritageQuest
Smaller pledge amounts will be accepted if the suggested
amount cannot be met. Negotiations with the vendor will
begin on May 1, 2004 with whatever monies are available at
that time. Libraries will be invoiced for their pledge after
the May 1st date, unless the amount of money to continue
statewide access is not met. In that case, HeritageQuest
Online will be developed as a TexSelect option with a
subscription fee different than what is currently proposed
as a pledge amount.

************
Due to the funding cuts in FY 2004 and FY 2005, the State
Library does not have enough money to renew Heritage Quest
beginning July 1, 2004.
Because HQ is a popular database, TexShare will attempt to
raise the funds through an appeal to libraries and the users
of HQ.
In a few weeks Peggy Rudd, Director of the Texas State
Library and Archives, will send your library a request for a
pledge. If there are enough pledges, it may be possible to
collect enough money to continue HQ for another year.
If not, access will end on June 30. (The HQ vendor appears
to want our business, so it is possible that the vendor may
allow continued access if it appears that we could raise
enough in just a few more months.)
The TexShare Electronic Information Working Group suggests
informing local genealogists and other HQ users of the need
for funds. The pledge amounts have not been set, but it is
likely that small to medium sized libraries will be asked to
pledge between $500 and $2,000, with the bigger libraries
asked for considerably more.
Please tell HQ users that simply appealing to the State
Library and TexShare will not help.
Even with TexShare collecting $1.5 million in fees from
libraries, there is only enough money to renew the Ebsco and
Gale packages in July 2004. (First Search and WorldCat were
renewed in July 2003 for two years, when the State Library
had more money available.)
In June TexShare must also drop Stat!Ref, which costs almost
as much as HQ and is used by libraries supporting health
science programs.
TexShare will be short $1 million of the amount required in
July 2005 to renew the current database packages (from Gale,
Ebsco, and OCLC), so it is likely that some of the databases
from these vendors will not be continued after June 2005.
