FREE Workshop via teleconference on Friday, April 16th -- Joe Janes and
Colleagues: Preparing for the Future of Digital Reference
As part of the 2003-04 season of the College of DuPage teleconferences, the
Texas State Library reminds Texas library staff of the opportunity to
participate in "Joe Janes and Colleagues: Preparing for the Future of
Digital Reference". This program will be broadcast as part of the College of
DuPage's 2003-04 "Virtual Reference Services" series from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. Central time on Friday, April 16th, 2004.
ALL Texas library staff are invited to view this program free of charge at
participating host sites in Texas. Library directors, managers and all
reference services librarians are especially encouraged to attend.

College of DuPage Virtual Reference Services Teleconference
April 16th, 2004, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central Time
Sponsored by the Library Development Division of the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission

OVERVIEW:
Discussion will focus on how libraries can seize opportunities to make their
reference services central to the information lives of users. Says Janes: "I
see the last several years as the most profound period in the history of
reference work. Nearly every aspect of the work has been re-examined, called
into question, rethought and revisited as the contexts in which it goes on
change." Issues to be discussed include privacy, collaboration, customer
service, staff training and organizational changes.

PRESENTERS:
        -- Joe Janes, Associate Professor and Chair of Library and
Information Science, the Information School of the University of Washington
and Founding Director of the Internet Public Library;
        -- Mary Anne Hodel, Director, Orange County Library (Orlando, FL);
        -- Joe Thompson, Project Coordinator, Maryland AskUsNow!.
        -- Michael Jackson and Richard M. Dougherty, Hosts.

REGISTRATION AND HOST SITE LOCATION INFORMATION:
No formal advance registration is required of participants. Participants
need only visit the TSLAC Webpage for this teleconference, view the list of
participating host sites, decide which host site they would like to attend,
notify the site coordinator at that host site of their plans to attend at
least 24 hours in advance of the event and then sign-in at the host site on
the day of the event.

CREDIT HOURS:
Two (2) hours of TSLAC Continuing Education Credit will be offered to
