The Houston-based Swalm Foundation has a history of giving to public libraries, especially in rural areas. I just noticed on their web site that they are going to be spending down their assets over the next couple of years. If you’ve ever thought about submitting a grant proposal to them, I’d go ahead and get in. Below is the message from the web site. For more information, go to:

Notification of Spend-Down,

June 2, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After careful deliberation, the Board of Trustees of the Swalm Foundation has decided to spend down its assets, primarily through Foundation-initiated projects.

These projects will be directed toward areas of need (predominately in Texas) that have traditionally been the focus of the Foundation. It is expected that the spend-down process will be concluded in 2006. Candidate organizations for special projects have been identified and will be asked to submit grant proposals.

Until further notice, Swalm Foundation will continue to respond on a limited basis to unsolicited requests for funding from agencies that meet the criteria and guidelines contained in this Web site.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By practice, most Swalm Foundation grants are made to human service organizations in Texas that serve the homeless, the educationally and economically disadvantaged, survivors of domestic violence, victims of child abuse and neglect, and the mentally or physically disabled.

Programs related to literacy, early childhood development, after-school activities, parenting, senior assistance, and health education are some of the areas that the Foundation has supported in the past.

The Foundation is especially interested in assisting organizations in parts of Texas that have very limited resources, including small towns and rural areas.

Swalm Foundation is a Texas nonprofit corporation operating as a private foundation under Internal Revenue Code Section 509(a) and a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3). IRS form 990 can be viewed at http://www.guidestar.org
