This is a message from CTLS-L. Selecting "Reply" will send a message to the originator. Selecting "Reply to All" will send a message to the entire list. --------------------------------------------------------- You’re probably all familiar with the
National Film Registry. Did you realize there is also a National Recording
Registry? The Library of Congress (LC) has selected the second crop of 50
recordings for the registry, which debuted in 2002. Like titles in the National
Film Registry, these recordings have been deemed “culturally, historically, or
aesthetically” significant to our nation’s history. This year, however, the
inductees were expanded to include non-American recordings such as The Beatles’
1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Richard
Wagner’s complete Ring cycle, conducted by Sir Georg Solti.
Spoken word recordings are also included, such as the 1941 World Series Game
Four and the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion. Registry recordings must be at least 10
years old. Nominations for the registry were gathered from members of the
public, who submitted suggestions online and from the National Recording
Preservation Board, which comprises leaders in the fields of music, recorded
sound and preservation. So, if you’re looking for some good ideas
for CDs to add to your library’s collection, scoot on over and take a look at
the complete list, http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2004/04-061.html Got a favorite recording you think is
missing from the list? LC is currently accepting nominations for the 2004
National Recording Registry at the National Recording Preservation Board Web
site, http://www.loc.gov/nrpb.
The deadline for public nominations is July 15, 2004. Sharon Herfurth Central Texas Library System |
