Children's author Danziger dies

Popular children's author Paula Danziger, who wrote The Amber Brown book series, has died aged 59.

The American writer died on Friday at St Luke's Hospital in New York after complications from a heart attack.

Danziger also wrote modern children's classic The Cat Ate My Gymsuit and had a regular slot on BBC One show Live and Kicking in the 1990s.

Her editor Margaret Firth said: "Kids adored this wonderful, original woman who was their fierce ally and friend."

Flamboyant

With realistic and sympathetic characters, The Cat Ate My Gymsuit established Danziger as one of America's most popular authors when published 30 years ago.

Its heroine Marcy faces adolescent worries about her weight and pimples, frustration with her younger brother and concern about her father's verbal abuse.

Described by her publishers as a flamboyantly funny and deeply honest writer, Danziger went on to publish more than 30 books, translated into dozens of languages.

Doug Whiteman, executive vice president of Penguin Group Inc, said: "We have lost not only an extraordinary writer but also an extremely caring, giving person.

"Paula will long be remembered for the many hours she gave to aspiring writers and young editors as she tried to help bring along the next generation of publishing talent."
