Subject: NN/LM SCR membership benefits

I am writing you as Public Library members of the National Network of

Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region.  I need to let you know about

two benefits of membership for which you are eligible if you are interested.

1) MedlinePlus has a section of its website (under Other Resources) that is

called “Find a Library” (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/libraries.html).

If you would like to be included in this section because you are willing to

use your resources and reference staff to help people find health

information, please e-mail me back and let me know and we will add you to

this list.  MedlinePlus gets approximately 4 million unique visitors per

month (they won’t all be calling you, but it is a good way of getting your

library’s name out).

2) The National Network of Libraries of Medicine has an online service

entitled “Find a library that can help you with health information.”

(http://nnlm.gov/members/adv.html)  All of you are listed in this service

because you are members.  However, if a searcher selects “Reference Services

for the Public” or has “Consumer Health Collection” in the advanced search,

your library will not appear unless you have given us permission to include

you in these categories.  This is a policy set up primarily for medical

libraries who might not help the public, and who might not have consumer

health collections.

If someone is using this search to find libraries in your area that will

help them with health reference, they won’t find you unless you e-mail me

back and tell me that you would like to be listed as a) a library that

provides health information to the public; and/or b) a library with a

consumer health collection.  It is entirely up to you if you would like to

be listed that way.

MedlinePlus and NNLM.gov are two completely separate websites.  You are

entitled to be listed on one and not on the other if you would like.

Feel free to call me at 800-338-7657 if you have any questions.

Thank you very much!

Karen Vargas
