HI, Here is the latest from Chirstine McNew at the Texas State Library.
Dear Librarians,
The Texas State Library began mailing the 2005 Texas Reading
Club manuals to participating libraries on Friday, January 28. This year's
manual is on CD-Rom and contains all of the color artwork and clip art. We
hope that you enjoy its many user-friendly features! "Go Wild...Read!" is
the 2005 theme, and the manual is filled with exciting puppet plays,
stories, reader's theater scripts, songs, fingerplays, and other programming
suggestions. For those who are eager to use the manual, it is currently
online in a printable PDF format on the Texas State Library's 2005 Texas
Reading Club web page at
www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/2005/index.html. An HTML version with
live links will soon be added to the web site. If you do not receive your
manual on CD-Rom by Monday, February 7, please let me know.
Award-winning children's book illustrator Michael Austin
created the posters, bookmarks, certificates, and clip art for this year's
Texas Reading Club. The artwork will be mailed to participating public
libraries by March 31, 2005. Mr. Austin is the illustrator of The Horned
Toad Prince by Jackie M. Hopkins and many other wonderful children's books.
On the CD-Rom manual, you will find downloadable color artwork and clipart
that you may use to promote your reading club. For your convenience, the
clip art by Michael Austin is also available on the 2005 Texas Reading Club
web page. Mr. Austin possesses the copyright to the artwork and librarians
are asked to adhere to the statement of "Acceptable Use of Artwork" at
www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/2005/clipart/use.html.
Lucas Miller, the Singing Zoologist, composed the original
theme song, "Go Wild...Read!", and you may listen to it on the 2005 Texas
Reading Club web site. The purpose of the theme song is to promote reading,
libraries, and the 2005 Texas Reading Club, and librarians are asked to
follow the "Appropriate Use of Theme Song" at
www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/2005/manual/song/use.html.
Mark your calendars! The Children's Round Table will host
the 2005 Texas Reading Club program at TLA in Austin on Thursday, April 7,
2005 from 9:00-9:50 a.m. Come and be inspired by presentations by the
talented librarians who wrote the manual, by Lucas Miller, and by Sally
Meyers who once again wrote the piggyback theme song. The manual authors
are Barrie Alguire, Maureen Ambrosino, Consuelo Forray, Michele Gorman,
Shelly Lane, Jeanette Larson, and Kim Lehman.
We encourage librarians to reach out to children with
disabilities this summer! The Talking Book Program (TBP) at the Texas State
Library will be promoting the Texas Reading Club to young patrons and
encouraging them to contact their local public libraries to sign up. TBP
is a joint state and federal program that provides unabridged books in
alternate formats for Texans of all ages who are unable to read standard
print materials due to temporary or permanent visual, physical, or reading
disabilities. TBP will supply children's books on tape, in large print and
Braille directly to eligible patrons through the mail and can assist young
patrons in tracking the books they have read. Please review the section in
the manual on "Serving Children with Disabilities" and visit the TBP website
at www.TexasTalkingBooks.org. The web site lists eligibility requirements
and contains downloadable applications. It also includes a training manual
for librarians at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/tbp/forlibrarians.html. You may
call TBP at 800-252-9605 if you need assistance in serving your young
patrons with disabilities.
