The TexShare Databases are electronic information resources that are
authoritative and ad free. Using the power of the Internet, the TexShare
Databases are available 24 hours a day in the homes or offices of registered
patrons of libraries that participate in the program. It's like having a
virtual library's reference collection available on your computer desktop.
Workshop Description:
OCLC's WorldCat database provides access to a variety of searching functions
and advanced features. This course covers basic search features, user
interface, and new FirstSearch features. In addition, tips for specifying
and developing search strategies are discussed. The course is provided by
the Texas State Library and Amigos Library Services at no cost to attendees
(some sites may request a small donation to cover cost of refreshments,
please see confirmation letter upon registration).
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Library staff and volunteers who assist the public in finding information
online AND who wish to gain more detailed knowledge of the WorldCat database
available through TexShare. Academic and public library staff may attend.
OBJECTIVES. Participants will:
* Learn search tips and strategies for using the WorldCat database
* Gain effective training techniques to use with colleagues and
patrons
* Obtain skills to use FirstSearch databases more effectively
Each class will be repeated in both morning and afternoon.
Each session will include a hands-on overview of the FirstSearch features
and functions available through TexShare from Amigos, search tips and
strategies for using the databases, and an opportunity for hands-on
exercises.
PREREQUISITES:
Familiarity with using a computer mouse
Familliarity with using an Internet browser
Familiarity with online searching techniques
