Here is the latest from the Texas State Library regarding summer reading
programs.

Amanda

Now that the 2005 Texas Reading Club is winding down, many of you are
beginning to plan your 2006 Reading Clubs. The 2006 theme is "Reading: The
Sport of Champions!" and the artist is Frank Remkiewicz, illustrator of the
Froggy series by Jonathan London. I am very happy to announce that the clip
art is now available on the Texas State Library web site at
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/2006/index.html. It is
delightful! As you begin preparing for your 2006 Reading Clubs, please
review the Acceptable Use of Artwork, also on the web page.

Next week, Order Forms for the 2006 Texas Reading Club materials (posters,
bookmarks, certificates, reading logs, and manuals on CD-Rom) will be mailed
to you. The Order Form will also be available online. Along with the 2006
Order Form, the Evaluation Form for the 2005 Texas Reading Club will also be
mailed next week. The Evaluation Form is currently online at
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/projects/trc/forms/eval.html.

Please have a look at Steve Brown's article in this summer's Texas Library
Journal entitled, "What Is a Summer Worth?" Many of you are familiar with
research that shows that children may lose 3 months of reading skills when
they do not read during the summer, and that the loss is cumulative each
year. As you know, teachers must remediate this loss, and it may take
several months for children to regain their reading skills. The article
states that Texas spends $7,860 for each child in K-12, and that your summer
reading club may be saving hundreds of dollars per child. In fact, the
amount is estimated at $873 per child. Multiply that times the number of
children in your reading club, and you will discover that you make a greater
difference than you ever imagined. I hope you will share this with your
library administration, your school library and other community partners,
and with families in your community, so that they may recognize the value of
your reading club.

Thank you for all of your hard work in hosting your reading clubs. I hope
that August is restful and rejuvenating.

Kindest regards,
