Subject: PAC HUG

Hi all ... a few things about the Gates PAC HUG grant.

Stacey's internship is over. Her last day was Wednesday .. just before
Thanksgiving.
There is a possibility that I will get some assistance soon .. perhaps as
early as next Monday.

In the meantime, please bear with me. I am managing Staying Connected and
PAC HUG. They are both terribly time-consuming. Friday was a state holiday
and I took off on Monday. This means that I have 5 days worth of email to
catch up on.
Many of the emails are specific questions about PAC HUG (and Staying
Connected). To save me a bit of time, I thought I'd summarize some
information.

For TSLAC's purposes, we need ONLY a name and operating system for each
computer that is inventoried.
In reality, we only need to see the number of computers that they received
via the original Gates grant. For example, if they received four computers
and a server, then TSLAC will expect to see (at minimum) 5 computers on the
inventory sheet. If there are less, then we will be contacting those
libraries. If there are more, then we will not be contacting them.

Some folks don't realize that the server should also be inventoried. It
should. This "server" isn't a true server as we typically think of them.
Gates thinks of them as a "computer". So, in the example I used above, if
only 4 computers show up on their inventory, we'd need to know about the 5th
one.

Each library will be getting set funds for each computer. Until the entire
inventory (across the state) is completed and analyzed, we will NOT know
that amount per computer. But, we do know that it will an amount per
computer. So, if it is determined that the amount is $900 per computer,
then a library with four computers and a server would get $4500. They would
use those funds to replace computers ... if they want to spec out a server,
then they might not have sufficient funds to get all five computers.
Eligible expenditures include hardware and software. There is NO software
requirement beyond office productivity titles (such as Word/Excel) in this
grant. So, they can spend the money all on hardware -- or in combination,
if they choose.

The libraries own the software on the original Gates computers -- that
software can be removed from those older NT machines and moved to new
equipment. Instructions to do this were created by Dale Musselman and are
on the pacomputing.org website. I don't remember the exact location, but
can provide it at a later date.

I will do my best to find out which libraries have not yet logged in to do
their inventory. I make no promises that I will get that list to you today
-- but I'll try. My priority today is to respond to my various emails ...
that could take most of the day. During that process, I may very well be in
TechAtlas and do a sort. If I do, then I'll zip a list off to you at that
time . . .

I very much appreciate all of your help in this process. It could not have
been done without all of you! Just before Stacey left, we had a 66%
completion rate! I consider that a success! Now, all we have to do is get
the rest!

I have a few libraries that are asking for assistance in doing the inventory
.. I may send the passwords/login information to you guys so that you can
assist them. Otherwise, it may take me days to get to it . . .

Thanks! Hope you each had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know I did!

Marilyn
