The Institute of Museum and Library Services announces the 2006 competition for the National Awards for Museum and Library Service, which honor outstanding American museums and libraries that have made extraordinary contributions to their communities. The postmark deadline for receipt of all materials is February 15, 2006. Please see: http://www.imls.gov/grants/library/lib_nals.htm for library application materials. This is the nation's highest honor for the extraordinary public service provided by recipient institutions. Each organization will receive $10,000 and will be honored at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. Library nominators may direct questions about the National Awards for Museum and Library Service by e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the IMLS Office of Library Services or by phoning (202) 653-4656. QUALIFICATIONS AND CRITERIA FOR SELECTION The principal criterion for selection is the museum or library's commitment to public service through exemplary and innovative programs and community partnerships. Nominations should describe the institution's goal in serving its community, the target population served, the community partnerships and efforts undertaken to achieve the goal, the outcome of these efforts during the last two to three years, and projections for future efforts in this area. Achievements that might be highlighted include programming that demonstrates how the institution has attracted new audiences; innovative programming that addresses current educational, social, economic, or environmental issues; and positive effects of the institution's collaboration with other organizations in the community. Nominations are reviewed by the members of the National Museum and Library Services Board, the IMLS's Presidentially appointed board of twenty advisors, who make recommendations to the IMLS Director. The IMLS Director makes the final selection. HOW TO NOMINATE Any individual may submit a nomination using the nomination form, and nominations from institutions of all sizes are encouraged. To be considered, nominees must submit all required information by February 15, 2006. Also, three representatives from the community served by the institution must submit letters of recommendation either with the nomination form or separately to IMLS by the deadline date. Please do not include photographs, publications, videotapes, or other products. If sent, these materials will not be returned. ELIGIBILITY Public or private nonprofit institutions are eligible to receive this award. Nominated institutions must be open to the general public for at least 120 days per year and be located in the United States, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, or the Freely Associated States in the Pacific.
