Peg – Austin Public Library, while I was a branch manager, experimented with several solutions to the” full book drop at holidays” problem. Really, it’s not fair to our customers to close the book drop, unless there is no other solution and vandalism/theft is occurring. The best solution we found is to pay a staff member for say, an hour’s time, to go empty the book drop each day you are closed (either checking-in the materials or marking the carts with the date the items were removed. That way the service is provided and the drop doesn’t get jammed. I hope this helps!

Subject: Book Drop

We have raised the question of possibly closing the outside book drops when the library is closed for holidays for next year.

We are considering the options of closing the book drop for all of the holidays or perhaps just for holidays where we are closed for two or more days.

The questions that I need answered:

  1. Do you close your book drops and what are the impacts?
  2. Do you close your book drops for all holidays or just the longer ones and which ones do you close it for?

Thank you so very much for your time in answering this.
