Description:
This
workshop will introduce library staff to the joint ALA/PLA early literacy
initiative, Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library. Participants will learn about research
on early literacy, presenting Every Child Ready to Read workshops for parents
and caregivers, and will explore ways to incorporate the six early literacy
skills into library programs for young children. (For more information about Every Child

Presenter
Bios:
Denise Trabucco, Cresencia Huff, and Deirdre Murphy work with the Little Read Wagon emergent literacy program at the San Antonio Public Library. Each has been involved with Every Child Ready to Read since early 2002. They helped to develop the workshops, test the material, redesign the workshops, and implemented Every Child Ready to Read in San Antonio. Through the Little Read Wagon, they have conducted Every Child Ready to Read training programs in Bay City, Wharton, Fort Worth, for several independent school districts in the San Antonio area, and in Oklahoma and Chicago.

Objectives:
Participants
will gain:
- Knowledge
of current research on early literacy development, the role of the
parent/caregiver, and examples of the development of each of the six early
literacy skills at each level.
- Knowledge
and skills to present Every Child Ready to Read workshops for parents and
caregivers in the library and community.
- Knowledge
and skills to incorporate the six early literacy skills into library programs
for young children.
Who Should
Attend?
Library staff in public or school libraries who work with young children and their caregivers.
Limit: 50 Attendees in Jourdanton, Garland,
Round Rock, and El Paso; 30 Attendees in Junction.

Workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.

& Refreshments:
Participants
will have lunch on their own.
In Jourdanton, the Friends of the Library will
provide lunch for a $5.00 donation.
A $3.00
donation for refreshments may be requested, depending on the
location.
Comfort:
Please dress casually and comfortably. Training room temperatures are usually difficult to regulate, so carry a sweater if you tend to be cold.
