New advocacy tools for rural, native and tribal libraries to be
unveiled at ALA Annual Conference

The Committee on Rural, Native and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds will
be introducing new tools and resources to help small libraries
(primarily with populations under 10,000) conduct advocacy and outreach
efforts in their communities. The new initiative has been developed in
collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA) Office for
Outreach and Literacy Services and The Campaign for Americas Libraries.

There will be a Rural Advocacy @ your library Progress Update during
the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. It will take place on
Saturday, June 24, 2006, from 4 to 5:15 pm in the Morial Convention
Center, Room 345, immediately following the Rural, Native and Tribal
Libraries of All Kinds Town Hall Meeting.

The program will include a discussion of research that was conducted
over the course of the last year to help prepare the new tools and
materials, including a Rural Impact Survey undertaken by Clarion
Universitys Center for Rural Librarianship and focus groups from the
Joint Conference of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries and the
Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services.

New tools to be unveiled include a tip sheet entitled, A Small but
Powerful Guide to Winning Big Support for Your Rural Library. A
companion online toolkit with a sample action plan and outline,
customizable publicity materials, promotional ideas, tips and strategies
also will be reviewed. Both of these new resources will be available in
mid-June at www.ala.org/rural , www.ala.org/native and
www.ala.org/tribal under Advocacy. Best practices in advocacy and
outreach for rural, native and tribal libraries also will be shared.

Speakers from the Rural, Native and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds
Committee include: Carol Barta, assistant director, North Central Kansas
Library System; Chair; David Ongley, director, Tuzzy Consortium Library,
Barrow, Alaska; and Danny Hales, director, Suwannee River Regional
Library, Live Oak, Fla. Satia Orange, director, ALA Office for Literacy
and Outreach Services, and Deborah Bloom, manager, The Campaign for
Americas Libraries, will be presenting as well.
